The computer market grew in the fourth quarter of 2010 by nearly a fifth. It turns out tablets were a major driving force behind the increased sales.

Apple is rising in the ranks, jumping to the third spot in the top PC manufacturers list, powered by the strong iPad and Mac sales...

The report by Canalys makes an interesting case – with screens of 7” and up, enough processing power to multitask and rich selection of apps, tablets have a rightful place in the sales numbers for computers, so the Apple iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab were included in the statistics.

The iPad is pushing Apple forward in a similar way to the netbook push that ASUS, Acer and Samsung enjoyed these last few years. Apple has leapfrogged Dell and Lenovo, placing third with 11.5 million shipments and 10.8% market share. The company also posted a staggering year-on-year growth of 241% (and enjoyed a profitable quarter), while the other companies were in the 10-20% range.

Regional growth is also interesting – Central and Eastern European market for desktops, laptops, netbooks and tablets grew nearly 40% year-on-year, while Western Europe saw the lowest growth of nearly 11%. Latin American and Asian-Pacific markets also had notable growths.

Canalys predicts that the increases in the VAT rate, coinciding with waiting for the refreshed lineup from Intel, will result in significant discounts of the current-gen computers in the UK, Poland, Latvia, Slovakia and Switzerland.

Capacitive displays are great but gloves are their kryptonite – and let’s face it, in the winter months using gloves is quite common. The thing about capacitive displays is that they react to skin contact and while your fingers are probably wrapped up in warm gloves, your nose isn’t.

That’s right, if you have an iPhone and a nose handy, there’s a solution to your gloved-dialing problems...

The app called NoseDial (what else?) features a large, customizable UI, which makes it easy to operate with your decidedly un-dexterous nose. You have the option to scroll through the contact list by just tilting the iPhone and then tap the desired contact with your nose, minimizing the chance you’ll get strange looks by passersby.

The app supports “difficulty levels” so you can start off easily or just set it to the most difficult (and functional) mode and use it with your fingers, if you like the skinnable UI with contact photos.

The app costs $0.99 and is compatible with iOS 3.2 and higher.

The Download Squad have a video of NoseDial in action – check it out and carefully consider if you can do that in public.

Twitter is where rumors are born and distributed lightning fast. The social network just published their 2010 top tweet subjects and the top tech topics of the year turned out to be the Apple iPad and Google’s Android OS.

Twitter isn’t my cup of tea but even though it isn’t, it’s still intriguing to see what were the most discussed topics this year. Twitter has just released the top trends on Twitter for 2010 based on the 25 billion tweets sent in 2010.

On the list of the top 10 overall subjects, among the Mexican Gulf oil spill, the Inception movie and Justin Bieber teenage superstar, we find two tech-related names, Apple iPad and Google Android (at positions 6 and 7, respectively).

Leaving the Top 10 overall subject aside, here’s the Top 10 dedicated tech trends list:
1. Apple iPad
2. Google Android
3. Apple iOS
4. Apple iPhone
5. Call of Duty Black Ops
6. New Twitter
7. HTC
8. RockMelt
9. MacBook Air
10. Google Instant

As you can see, Apple and Google dominate in the tech world of Twitter. Those are connected to 6 of the 10 topics listed above.

"120 000 iPads pre-ordered in just one day, plus a diamond version already in the works"

51 000 Apple iPads have been pre-ordered only two hours after the thing went on pre-order. And a day later the number of pre-orders reached estimated 120 000. Do you need another proof that Apple is the ultimate money making machine?

In the meantime a diamond iPad popped up. But that is something we’ll talk about a bit later. Now, let’s first see how the iPad pre-orders are doing.

Putting the Apple logo on anything is a surefire way of making it sell like peanuts. No matter what people say or think of the giant iPod touch, called iPad, facts speak for themselves: everybody loves the iPad.

Or at least 120 000 people thought so and pre-ordered it before even seeing it live. As you know, the iPad went on pre-order in the USA last Friday, 12 March, and three weeks later, on 3 April, it will start shipping.

The initial euphoria managed to increase the pre-orders-per-hour to 25 000 so that the number of pre-ordered iPads reached 51 000 in the first two hours. By the end of the day a total of about 120 000 pre-orders have been received (not counting the number of reserved but not ordered iPads).

Two of every three customers went for the Wi-Fi-only version of the device while only around 30% of the people decided to get the iPad featuring both 3G and Wi-Fi support (which will become available by the end of April).

And when it comes to the onboard memory, the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models turned out equally attractive.

Before I let you share your thoughts about the iPad and its incredible first-day pre-orders, it’s time for the diamond iPad I told you a second ago. It’s exactly as tacky as it sounds. The whole device is covered by a huge number of small diamonds (11.43 carats in total) graded G/H in color and VS2/SI1 in clarity.

The diamond iPad will start selling on 1 June for good 20 000 US dollars.

"Apple iPad up goes on preorder, let’s see how it does"

You might have noticed earlier today that the Apple Store website was down again. And as it usually happens after it went back up again a new product was available for order.

Now my editor doesn’t allow me to open the discussion of why Apple alone in the world needs to take down their whole company website to announce the availability of a new product so I’ll just give you the good news.

The Apple iPad is now available on pre-order and if you really, really want to be among the first ones to have it, you might wanna order it right now.
Your shiny tablet will be at your porch on April 3 (or April 5 if Saturday delivery isn’t an option in your area). There is a limit of two per customer.

If two are enough for you, head for the Apple Store to preorder one. Or, you know, don’t… Picking up a Flash-less tablet with no proper OS for the price of two basic netbooks definitely calls for a reconsideration.

"The iPad is hitting the USA on 3 April, preorders start in a week"

The iPad is coming. On April 3. And that’s as official as it gets. And if you want to be among the first owners of Apple’s latest creation, you can pre-order one starting on March 12.

Up until now it was known that the Wi-Fi-only versions of the Apple iPad will start shipping within 60 days after iPad’s announcement while the Wi-Fi + 3G capable iPads were expected to become available within a month later. Not clear enough, huh?

Well, now it can’t get any clearer. Visiting Apple’s website you’ll see that preorders in the USA start on March 12 and less than a month later, on April 3, iPod Touch’s bigger brother will start selling. The rest of the world will see the iPad an iTad later.

The prices of the diverse iPad versions remain untouched, however, there is hope for this situation to change at some point.

"Apple announces Aperture 3, available immediately"

You might have noticed yesterday that the Apple Store website was down for a while. It turns out that the addition of a new product caused this hiccup – the company is now distributing the new 3rd version of their image processing software Aperture. Just how can Apple be in the business for so long and still not find a way to update their website without shutting it down first is beyond me, but that’s a whole other story.

Aperture 3 features more than 200 new features, the most noteworthy of them being Faces, Places and Brushes. Faces let’s you sort and browse your images by the people that appear on them, while Places allows you to manually geo-tag your images by dropping them on a map. Brushes is a more photographic feature that allows you to paint effects over your photos.

Aperture 3 is available from the Apple store for 200 US dollars to new customers, while upgraders only need to pay half as much

"Apple iPad overview: The good, the bad and the ugly"

You might be aware that Apple just announced a certain little (or not so little depending how you look at it) gadget called the Apple iPad. One only needs a quick glance to realize that it looks like a vastly oversized iPod Touch but what are its main strengths and its greatest disadvantages? Here is the way I see it:

Key features
* Magnificent 9.7” capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels
* Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity
* Optional 3G connectivity (data only)
* 1 GHz Apple A4 CPU
* iPhone OS 3.2
* 16/32/64 GB of onboard storage
* Weight of 680 grams (730 grams for the 3G version)
* Very slim 12.7mm waistline
* Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
* Haptics feedback
* 10 hours battery life and 1 month of stand-by
* Accelerometer and compass
* Compatible with every iPhone app without any modifications
* The cheapest version costs less than an unlocked iPhone
* iBook application
* The keyboard dock (purchased separately) easily converts the iPad into a nettop

Main disadvantages
* It’s not a computer but a big iPod Touch
* No multitasking
* No Flash support for the web browser
* No camera
* No standard USB port (you can get USB connectivity with an accessory but you need to pay extra)
* No real GPS receiver (though there is cell-tower triangulation)
* 130 US dollars (90 euro) for a 3G modem seems pricey
* iTunes required for uploading content
* No kickstand – it cannot stand on a table without the dock
* No USB host
* Looks pretty easy to drop
* No exchangeable battery
* Typing is quite uncomfortable
* micro-SIM, instead of regular SIM for the 3G models
* No memory card slot
